A gentle reminder if needed: you are allowed to do whatever works for you during the holidays. You are allowed to protect your energy, your time, your space, your home, and your bank account . Gentle reminder: Sometimes when you think you’re taking steps backwards, you’re actually moving forwards. Prior to therapy, you constructed your world in a very specific way. And in some ways, therapy is a process in which you walk around your internal world and observe, question, challenge, and even reconstruct things. So it makes sense if you start to feel more or differently when you’re going through this process. Growth and healing can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful. But feeling more and/or differently does not mean you’re moving backwards. It might actually mean the opposite. It might be a visceral notification that you’re growing, changing, and healing. It’s a cliché for a reason. Sometimes you really do feel worse before you feel better and I believe it’s important to leave space for that as a possibility  @alexpack.therapy

Any of these thoughts sound like the track you're playing? - You suffer when you don't accept things as they are. When you tell yourself stories about how awful this thing is, or that it should be a different way, or that there's something wrong with you for experiencing it, you suffer. you feel shame, you feel angry, you feel defeated. - It's because you are fighting reality. It's because you're trying to tell yourself that you shouldn't feel this way and to feel other than you feel. This is invalidation at it's most painful. It takes the pain you are already feeling--depression, anxiety, dissatisfaction with your life--and multiplies it by 100. Because now you're feeling the pain of the initial emotion, and ALSO the pain of telling yourself how bad it is, how you should feel differently, and how wrong you are for feeling it. - Acceptance is the place to start. - You are feeling anxious. You are feeling depressed. You are feeling dissatisfied. PERIOD. The track stops there. - When you remove the *story* from the emotion, the pain continues, but the suffering changes. Acknowledging the reailty of the moment for WHAT IT IS rather than WHAT YOU THINK IT SHOULD BE, allows you to create space for several things: 1) To validate your feelings. It is totally okay to feel what you're feeling, even if it's painful. Acceptance does not mean you are *approving* of the feeling, it just means you're naming it for what it is without all the other junk attached. 2) To give yourself compassion for what you're feeling. When you get caught up in the stories above, there isn't a lot of compassion. But when you can say "I'm feeling anxious (full stop)", you have then created space to follow-up with "This really hurts, and I'm sorry you're feeling that way." Self-kindness FTW. 3) To decide what you want to do next. When you're busy telling yourself how awful a thing is, there isn't a lot of space to think about how you might change it. When you are able to say, without judgement and with self-compassion, "I'm feeling anxious", you make space to ask "What might be helpful right now? What do I really need? Over the coming weeks I will look at: Childhood trauma 👶🏻👧🏼🧒🏻 Affects of trauma neurologically & emotionally Treatment of trauma (trauma informed therapy) To try to simplify a definition for this week I have separated out two types of trauma. SINGLE INCIDENT TRAUMA & COMPLEX. SIT (PTSD):💣⚰️🧯💉 Single incident trauma occurs with `one off’ events. It is commonly associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Examples: flood, fire, sexual or physical assault in adulthood, car accidents, or from fighting in a war. Commonly overlooked causes of potential emotional and psychological trauma can also include: 1️⃣Breakup or divorce in a significant relationship 2️⃣Significantly humiliating experienced 3️⃣Surgery 4️⃣Falls or injuries 5️⃣Sudden, unexpected death of a loved one 6️⃣Diagnosis of a life-threatening or disabling condition PTSD is more likely to occur if you already have a history of trauma yourself or in your family, or a history of mental illness. You are also more at risk if your support network is limited. Complex trauma:  1️⃣Is usually interpersonal i.e. occurs between people 2️⃣Involves ‘being or feeling’ trapped 3️⃣Is often ongoing and/or repeated 4️⃣Involves challenges with shame, trust, self-esteem, identity and regulating emotions. 5️⃣Affects emotional and physical health, wellbeing, relationships and daily functioning - Examples: (Usually cumulative & occurs in childhood): neglect, adverse childhood experiences, domestic & family violence. ongoing sexual abuse/ exploitation, emotional abuse. (But it is not always the result of childhood trauma. It can occur in adults e.g. domestic and family violence, civil unrest etc.) It's normal to experience upsetting and confusing thoughts after a traumatic event, but most people improve naturally over a few weeks. Please see a GP or seek therapeutic support if problems persist.

I have received some messages about different grounding techniques. So, I’m going to be posting some of my favorite that I’ve learned from being in counseling myself and ones that my previous supervisor taught me! This is one of my favorites and is one of my go to’s for myself personally. It’s the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique. Sit in a comfortable position and take a few deep breathes in and then name 5 things you can see, take a deep breath in and exhale. Name 4 things you can feel, take a deep breath and exhale. Name 3 things you can hear, take a deep breath in and exhale. Name 2 things you can smell, take a deep breath in and exhale and then name 1 thing you can taste and take a deep breath in and exhale.

Μόνο εσύ μπορείς να φέρεις την αλλαγή στη ζωή σου! Κανένας άλλος δεν μπορεί να το κάνει για σένα. Κάπως έτσι ξεκινάει το ταξίδι της ψυχοθεραπείας! Άλλαξε το μέρος που πίνεις τον καφέ σου, άλλαξε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο ξεκινάς την ημέρα σου, άλλαξε το φλυτζάνι που πίνεις το τσάι σου ή ακόμα και την γεύση που συνήθιζες να επιλέγεις. Οι μικρότερες αλλαγές είναι πιο ανώδυνες. Μην έχεις την απαίτηση από τον εαυτό σου να αλλάξει από τη μια ημέρα στην άλλη. Η αλλαγή έχει ροή και εμπεριέχει επιλογη! Χρειάζεται κόπος, χρόνος, υπομονή αλλά και διάθεση να μετακινηθείς από τα αμετακίνητα. Πάμε να ξεκινήσουμε από τις πιο μικρές αλλαγές, εκείνες που νομίζεις πως δεν θα χρειαζόταν ποτέ να κάνεις. Όπως λέει και ο Carl Rogers "ο μόνος άνθρωπος που είναι πραγματικά μορφωμένος είναι εκείνος που έχει μάθει πως να μαθαίνει και πως να αλλάζει". Η μόρφωση δεν αφορά μόνο την εκπαίδευση αλλά και την συναισθηματική σου διεύρυνση! Θέλω να ξέρεις πως δεν είσαι μόνος σε αυτό, είμαστε μαζί! Usually, this is the case if people are similar in their communication styles, views, personalities and general approach to life. They’ll “approach each other similarly.”⠀ ⠀ With others, such as those who have a different personality or cultural background, you’ll need to be more direct about your boundaries. Consider the following example: “one person feels [that] challenging someone’s opinions is a healthy way of communicating,” but to another person this feels disrespectful and tense.⠀ ⠀ There are other times you might need to be direct. For instance, in a romantic relationship, time can become a boundary issue. Is empathy overrated? . Yes, if you’re a natural empath. . . Last month in NYC  @dr.saranasserzadeh talked to a room full of mostly therapists about the differences between empathy and compassion. Empathy is feeling the feelings of another. Compassion is feeling for another person. Dr. Nasserzadeh warns that endless empathy is a recipe for burnout. Compassion on the other hand allows us to care deeply for others while keeping a little space for ourselves to feel differently. That way we can be with someone and not be swept away in the tide of their suffering. Therapists aren’t the only ones that need this ability. . . My practice is for people who want better relationships. Sometimes that means that a partner needs to be more sensitive to the pain of their other(s). Sometimes it actually means that partners need to be a little less tuned in. Some natural empaths need to feel compassion for their partner(s) instead of empathy. . . It’s tricky business being in relationship. Empaths, have you ever made a choice that disappointed someone close to you? If yes, then you probably felt guilty. If not, then I worry that you’ve lost yourself in their presence. Figuring out the lines between empathy and compassion, between guilt and disappointment, between their feelings and yours is hard. I have a sign in my office with this saying on it. Some may think it’s for my clients, but it’s actually for me. As an Enneagram 1, I have a super harsh inner critic that tends to pick every little thing apart—especially mistakes. Perfection is an unrealistic goal, but apparently the inner critic hasn’t gotten that memo. ⠀ ⠀ Rather than being critical of ourselves and picking apart all the things that didn’t go the way we wanted them to, how about getting curious and giving ourselves a measure of grace? Some thoughts and questions to pose:⠀ ⠀ 🤔 What can I learn from this experience?⠀ ⠀ 🤔 Which parts of this experience went well? ⠀ ⠀ 🤔 How can I self soothe in a healthy way after this mistake? ⠀ ⠀ 🤔 Am I making assumptions about what others are thinking or putting words in their mouths they never actually said? ⠀ ⠀ 🤔 Think about why what others think or feel may be so important to you. Challenge those thoughts with a trusted friend or a therapist. ⠀ ⠀ Mistakes are, indeed, proof you’re trying something new or different. With determination and pure grit, Mary Louise was ready to begin untangling from the long tendrils of betrayal that ran through her life like kudzu.
